If you’re a frequent traveller there are times when you need some help with managing all that travel planning, the expenses and challenges that a life on the road or in the air throws at you. We’ve pulled together a list of some apps and news sites that will help to smooth your journey and keep stress levels low.

This week we share some of our favourite travel apps and places on the web for the best news to help you to make the most of your journey and keep up to date on the latest developments in business travel.

First let’s look at some useful apps:

Mapswithme

My top tip for never being lost on the road is to download the Mapswithme app. The maps work with your GPS and you don’t need wifi to know where you are. Where to find the best travel news:

Businesstraveller will give you all the latest on the latest airline alliances such as the announcement about the Etihad Airways alliance and where hotel groups have opened up new hotels if you’re keen on building your hotel loyalty points.

The Middleseat blog run by Wall Street Journal gives you insight into how the airline industry works behind the scenes and gives you tips on how to deal with a bad weather situation or how to charter a plane.

Gulliver is a well written business travel online section of the economist which helps to keep you updated on key trends from information on hotel crime to hidden hotel fees. It even reported on hotels in Las Vegas charging guests $50 if they put their own items in their room’s refrigerator. Sounds like a way to become unpopular very quickly.

The RoadWarriorette is a good blog to give you some top tips on travelling. It has some rants about those that hog chairs in crowded airport gate areas – we’ve all seen them. It falso offers top tips for female solo travellers and on ensuring you have good wifi on the go.

If you’re an early adopter and love new technology and travel a lot then you might enjoy Tnooz which has some great stories from around the world such as a recent feature on wearable technology and how you might use it when travelling.

Seat61 started out as a blog from Mark Smith who’s an ex railway man and expert who travelled a lot on trains and has since grown into a popular news and booking site for those who travel a lot by train. It has lots of tips on how to save money and has a refreshingly honest, human and down to earth commentary.
