  • At the southernmost tip of Shetland lies Sumburgh Head, a 100m rocky outcrop carrying a lighthouse designed by Robert Stevenson and built in 1821. Often this is the first and last that most visitors see of Shetland if they are travelling by sea. However the coastal scenery here is both dramatic and stunning. Sheer cliffs take chunks out of Sumburgh Head on both sides and often the walls of long abandoned dwellings teeter right on the edges of steep precipices.
