Chic Bristol Boutiques

Sometimes, mass-produced just won’t cut it. Whether it’s something for your home or to wear to a special event, we’re becoming evermore conscious of buying one-off pieces with wow factor that we’re unlikely to see anywhere else. Whether it’s thrift-shopping for pre-loved vintage or ordering one-offs, we’re demanding more from our suppliers than ever before.

This is great news of course for independent retailers and boutiques, as people turn away from the high-street giants and head to their doors.

One of the best places to shop for the alternative is Bristol – its quirky and relaxed vibes set the perfect backdrop for creative retailers to thrive in this market.

So if you are flying to Bristol, why not try some of its most individual and eccentric outlets to find something a cut above?

A truly original shop on the Gloucester Road selling beautiful handmade gifts, bespoke jewellery and limited edition prints and cards, Fig is run by six inspiring artists all selling their unique wares. Its got a purple shopfront but has six creative ladies run as small co-operative selling complementary but very different wares.

Robyn Coetzee specialises in kiln formed glass, using shapes, colours and patterns to produce beautiful art glass creations. Sinead Finnegan uses found materials and faded memories to create embroideries inspired by fashion, photography, fairytales and song lyrics.

Jemima Lumley creates personalised, one-off pieces of jewellery for customers all over the world and Chitra Merchant experiments with print processes like screenprint, monoprint and digitally manipulated marks to arrive at images.

Jane Ormes produces playful images, often featuring animals in absurd situations and Kate Tarling has been creating, making and designing using fabric and embroidery for as long as she can remember.

All the total creative might of these six ladies can be observed and admired at the Fig shop.

In order to maintain its non-mainstream mantra, Loot Vintage scours the globe’s coolest cities including Miami, New York and Paris to bring its unique collections back to Bristol. Some items are even upcycled on the shop floor, giving the shop an edge in the no-repeat product stakes.

Travellers to the area can enjoy preloved designer pieces at a fraction of their usual cost at the Rag Trade Boutique. This innovative store seeks to cure a seemingly incurable national trait – hoarding!

The outlet reckons many women in the UK wear only 10% of their wardrobe (sound familiar?) and encourages shoppers to bring in their disused designer treasures to swap them for other items or trade for cash or in-store credit. Why not take advantage of our generous 23kg baggage allowance and pack up your unwanted wares on your next flight to Bristol and you could pick up your next hidden gem for less than you thought!
