baggage allowance

This section will help to give your passenger advice on their baggage allowance for checked in and hand baggage for long haul and short haul flights.

We may not be able to accommodate all items of cabin baggage on an Embraer aircraft due to limited space within the cabin. Items will therefore be placed in the aircraft hold and for your traveller’s convenience they will be delivered to the aircraft side at their destination, for collection.

baggage liquid allowance

From 06 November a small amount of liquids will be allowed through security screening if:

  • the liquid is in a container with a capacity no greater than 100ml (or equivalent)
  • the containers are all contained within one closed transparent re-sealable plastic bag (such as a re-sealable freezer bag or zip top bag) which itself must not exceed 1 litre in capacity or 20cm x 20cm
  • the contents of the plastic bag fit comfortably and the bag is completely closed
  • The plastic bag should be taken out of your cabin bag and placed in a tray for x-ray screening.  In this case ‘liquids’ include gels, pastes, lotions, liquid/solid mixtures and the contents of pressurised containers, e.g. toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrups, perfume, deodorant, shaving foam, aerosols, etc.

This requirement will be introduced at the same time across all airports in the EU and is aligned with those already in place in the US and Canada.

cabin baggage allowance restrictions

The following cabin baggage allowance remains in place and is applicable to all passengers:

  • starting their journey at a UK airport
  • all passengers transferring from international flights at a UK airport

We advise passengers travelling to the UK to also adhere to UK cabin baggage allowance restrictions when travelling within Europe or to check individual airport operators.

  • each passenger is permitted to carry ONE item of cabin baggage through the airport security
  • the dimension of the bag must not exceed a maximum length of 56cm, width of 45cm and depth of 25cm (including wheels, handles, side pockets, etc)
  • all items carried by passengers must be x-ray screened
a handbag or bag can be contained within the one cabin bag, but must not exceed the maximum dimensions
items permitted in your cabin baggage

In addition to the liquids permitted in one transparent re-sealable bag you can take the following in your one cabin bag, as previously in place:

  • electrical equipment including laptops, mobile phones, MP3 players, portable music and DVD players, digital and film cameras, video cameras – all larger electrical equipment will need to be removed from your cabin baggage and x-ray screened separately
  • essential medicines in liquid form sufficient and essential for the flight in quantities less than 50ml (e.g. diabetic kit), as long as verified as authentic – items must be removed from the bag and placed in a tray and screened separately
  • solid cosmetics
  • baby milk and liquid baby food (the contents of each bottle or jar must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) are permitted in the cabin bag

other items

  • all coats and jackets must be removed and screened as cabin baggage
  • items normally carried in cabin baggage such as books, medicines in non-liquid form, keys and travel documents may be carried in the cabin bag as long as they fit into a bag no bigger than 56cm x 45cm x 25 cm
  • pushchairs and walking aids, including wheelchairs are permitted but must be security screened

outsize items

All items of luggage which do not fit in the permitted cabin baggage size must be checked in.  One musical instrument in its case (no items other than the instrument and its accessories may be carried in the case), will be allowed as a second item of cabin baggage.  The item will need to be screened and passengers should check if special arrangements need to be made.

flights from the USA and Canada

Passengers may take a small amount of liquids and gels.  Each passenger is limited to one, clear plastic, zip-top plastic bag that does not exceed 20cm x 19.5cm of travel-size toiletries of 3 ounces (90ml) or less.

Passengers travelling to the UK from the USA or Canada are permitted ONE carry-on bag, which must not exceed a maximum length of 56cm, width of 45cm and depth of 25cm (including wheels, handles, side pockets, etc).  In addition business and premium economy passengers at some airports, may be permitted a laptop, but are advised to check with the individual airport.

Customers travelling from the USA or Canada who are transferring onto another flight from a UK airport MUST adhere to UK requirements.

interline baggage allowance

If a passenger is travelling on a bmi domestic interline fare and then onto a different carrier on the same ticket, bmi will honour the luggage allowance of the first international carrier.

If a passenger is travelling on 2 different tickets then domestic luggage allowance is restricted to 20 kgs and luggage will not be through checked.

further information

We ask for your cooperation in the screening process by allowing sufficient time and being prepared before you arrive at the airport. Only pack essential items in your cabin baggage and pack your liquids, gels and such items in your checked luggage. Please also be aware any previously prohibited items remain in place.

maximum weight

All passenger travelling to and from the UK are not permitted to check in any bag that weigh's in excess of 32kg (70lbs). The maximum weight limit of 32kg does not relate to your overall entitlement but is a safety measure to reduce injuries to baggage handling staff.

single bag weight at London Heathrow

Passengers travelling through London Heathrow will only be able to check-in bags which weigh 32kg (70lbs) or less. bmi's baggage weight limits as shown above still apply, however if passengers wish to carry additional baggage this will be at additional cost and subject to weight restrictions on the aircraft.

If your travellers want to take heavier and/or extra luggage the single baggage weight must be no heavier than 32kg.

Passengers carrying heavier pieces will be asked to repack their luggage into smaller units. BAA have placed scales in each terminal so passengers can weigh their luggage before checking in. BAA will make sure that bags are available for re-packing at each terminal. If your traveller wants to take heavier items please call the travel trade helpline for more information.
