exceptional items of baggage, including sporting equipment

Exceptional items of baggage that require special handling may carry a charge depending on the fare purchased.

the items below are charged for on our short haul routes as follows:

  • tiny and economy fares - £15 charge per sector
  • business and premium economy fares - free of charge within weight allowance, then £15 charge per sector outside of weight allowance

Our business and premium economy fares allow passengers to take a piece of sporting equipment or other exceptional item of baggage as part of their baggage allowance as long as it is within the total allowance.

If the passenger is travelling on an economy or economy saver/sale fare they will be charged a flat fee of £15 per sector for each item.

Gold and silver Diamond Club members may carry an item of equipment for free if within weight allowance regardless of route or fare, except silver Diamond Club members travelling on economy saver/sale fares where the standard policy applies.

golfing equipment* - includes pair of golf shoes and one golf bag with clubs

skiing/snow boarding equipment* - includes one pair of skis/poles/boots or snow board and boots

bicyles* - must be suitably packed (accepted subject to hold space)

fishing equipment - includes one tackle box, rucksack/backpack, anglers basket, one rod bag or box

surfboards/sail boards/water skis (accepted subject to hold space)

canoes (accepted subject to hold space)


*these items can be paid for online during the booking process or via 'manage your booking'

Please note that if your journey has been booked on a single ticket but requires that you go via another location i.e. Edinburgh-Heathrow-Amsterdam you will only be charged once outbound and once inbound. If you choose to book the same journey but on separate tickets i.e. Edinburgh-Heathrow and then, Heathrow-Amsterdam you will be charged £15 per item for each sector of the journey. In this case you would be charged twice on the outbound and twice on the inbound journey.

firearms and other weapons are permitted free of charge within weight allowance as checked baggage subject to correct documentation and clearance by Customs or the Police and certain conditions including the following: the firearm is unloaded with all ammunition packed separately (max 5kgs); it is packed separately and packed in a strong box made of metal or fireboard. musical instruments can be carried as checked baggage free of charge within size and weight allowance.  Certain instruments can be carried in the cabin subject to an additional seat being purchased. Please contact reservations on 0870 6070 555 for more information.

Exceptional items of baggage on long haul flights, if within your baggage allowance, will be carried free of charge. If the item is outside your baggage allowance the item is charged per piece at the same rate as excess baggage (see below).

bmi operated domestic and european services

Excess baggage on bmi operated domestic short haul flights and Moscow is charged at £5/€7.50 per kg outbound, and £5/€7.50 per kg inbound.

If your journey has been booked on a single ticket but requires that you go via another location i.e. Edinburgh-Heathrow-Edinburgh, you will only be charged once outbound and once inbound. If you choose to book the same journey but on separate tickets i.e. Edinburgh-Heathrow and then Heathrow-Amsterdam, you will be charged £5 per kg for each sector of the journey.

bmi long haul operated services

If you are travelling long haul on bmi operated services the following are indicative charges that will apply ex UK: Chicago: £70 per piece; Caribbean and Las Vegas: £90 per piece; Riyadh: £19.90 per kilo; Jeddah: £17.10 per kilo.  Please note these rates are only approximate and may fluctuate.

If you are travelling on non-bmi operated (codeshare) flights, or connecting to a codeshare flight, excess baggage charges will apply and are calculated on an individual route basis - please contact our reservations centre on 0870 6070 555 for advice.
