Special items and sporting equipment

Sporting equipment and other items of baggage that require special handling may carry a charge, depending on the fare purchased.

The following are some of the most popular items where a charge may apply.

  • Golfing equipment (includes pair of golf shoes and one golf bag with clubs)
  • Skiing equipment (includes one pair of skis/poles/boots)
  • Bicycles (must be suitably packed, and accepted subject to hold space)
  • Fishing equipment (includes one tackle box, rucksack/basket/rod or box)
  • Surfboards/sail boards/water skis (accepted if hold space permits)
  • Canoes (accepted if hold space permits)

Additional benefits

Our Business, Premium Economy and Economy Flexible fares allow customers to take a piece of sporting equipment or other exceptional item of baggage as part of their baggage allowance as long as it is within the total allowance.

Passengers travelling on an Economy fare will be charged a flat fee of £25 per sector for each item. 

Gold and Silver Diamond Club members may carry an item of equipment for free if within weight allowance regardless of route or fare.

Gold and Silver Diamond Club members may carry an item for free if within weight allowance regardless of route or fare.
*If the journey has been booked on a single ticket but requires that the passenger goes via another location i.e. EDI-LHR-HAJ they will only be charged per direction (once outbound and once inbound). If they choose to book the same journey but on separate tickets i.e. EDI-LHR, LHR-HAJ they will be charged £25 per item for each sector of the journey. In this case they will be charged twice on the outbound and twice on the inbound journey.

Firearms

From 06 October 09, firearms are charged at £50 per sector on bmi routes to and from London Heathrow.

The firearm will be carried in the aircraft hold subject to correct documentation and clearance by Customs or the Police and certain conditions including the following:

  • The firearm should be unloaded (free of ammunition)
  • The firearm must be packed in a hard shell with a label attached
  • Ammunition must be packed separately in a box made of wood, metal or fibreboard and secured against movement
  • No more than 5kgs of ammunition allowed

Please note:  The charge for firearms does not apply for bmi Regional flights operating from regional airports including Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford and Manchester.  Passengers can carry firearms as checked baggage for free within their weight allowance.  Excess baggage charges apply for any additional weight carried.

Musical instruments

Musical instruments can be carried as checked baggage free of charge within size and weight allowance.  Excess baggage ratesapply if the allowance is exceeded.

Certain instruments such as cellos can be carried in the cabin subject to an additional seat being purchased as follows:

  • One item per passenger permitted
  • Charge the same fare for the instrument as the passenger (excluding tax)
  • Choose two adjacent seats: one for the passenger, one next to the passenger for the cello
  • Cello to be secured by the safety belt with extension if necessary
  • Maximum weight of the item: 75kgs with the centre of the mass no more than 30cms above the top of the seat cushion
  • No seats adjacent to an emergency exit may be used

Double Bass must be carried in the aircraft hold at all times.
