  • Aerosols and hairsprays - in checked in baggage only

hair curlers

  • Gas powered hair curlers (one per person) providing the safety cover is fitted at all times - checked in or cabin baggage.  Separate refills are not permitted.

Christmas crackers

Christmas crackers may be carried in small quantities in either checked or hand baggage, subject to being in the original unopened manufacturer’s packaging and made by a reputable company. No handmade crackers are acceptable.

Max: 12 crackers per passenger.

suit carriers

Customers can carry a suit carrier of stow-able size onboard, in addition to their one piece of normal cabin baggage.

television

  • Televisions must be suitably packed and are always carried in the hold and at the owner’s risk
  • A limited release tag will be attached to indicate bmi will accept no responsibility for any damage
  • Fragile Stickers will also be attached, and the item treated with all due care.

dead game birds/dead fish

Dead game birds and dead fish if for personnal consuption and in smal quantities can be carried in cabin bagggage - they should be vacuum shrink wrapped and carried within the passengers cabun baggage.

Larger quantities may be carried as hold baggage provided the birds/fish are sealed, do not give off unpleasant odours and do not represent any health hazard to the aircraft or its passengers.

There are no recognised containers for their carriage and bmi check-in staff must use their discretion.

Note are animals presented for carriage which do not fall into this category - they should eb refered to the caargo department or bmi dangerous goods manager for approval to travel, as there are restrictions in place which may prohibit carriage.

cigarette lighters

Passengers travelling to/from the USA cannot carry lighters in sterile areas of airports (airside) or onboard aircraft.

Further to this due to additional security checks it is no longer permitted to take cigarette lighters through security at any airport.  You can buy a lighter airside at the airport but it must be disposed of before boarding a flight.  

human remains

Human remains may only be accepted for travel as airfreight.  Enquires regarding carriage should be directed to our Cargo Department on 01332 854075.

Ashes may be carried as checked or cabin baggage, providing security are satisfied with the contents of the container.

samples and collections

Samples and collections may be accepted as registered baggage but bmi will not be liable for the transportation unless they are covered by insurance. 

On international flights, customs regulations prohibit the import or export of merchandise in passengers baggage.  All merchandise must be shipped as airfreight and the appropriate charges raised.

commercial travellers’ exceptions

Commercial travellers are permitted to carry samples in their baggage provided:

  • Special customs clearance is given at the airport of departure
  • They present themselves and their baggage at least 30 minutes prior to the normal check–in time
  • If they arrive after this 30 minutes deadline, the baggage may be forwarded on a subsequent flight, incurring freight charges.

powered wheelchairs

A wheelchair with a non-spill-able battery (dry cell) can be accepted in the hold provided:

  • The battery is disconnected and securely attached to the wheelchair
  • The terminals are insulated to prevent short circuit.

Note: Wheelchair/mobility aids with gel type batteries do not require the battery to be disconnected provided the battery terminal is insulated to prevent accidental short circuit.

A wheelchair with a spill-able battery can be accepted in the hold provided:

  • The wheelchair can be handled, stowed and secured in an upright position
  • The battery must be disconnected and/or securely attached to the wheelchair
  • The terminals are insulated to prevent short circuit.

If the battery is removed then the wheelchair or mobility aid may be carried without restriction.

  • The removed battery must be carried in strong ridged packaging
  • The packaging must be marked “Battery wet with wheelchair” or “Battery wet with mobility aid” and be labelled with the “Corrosive” and “Package Orientation” labels.
  • It must be leak proof and impervious to battery fluid
  • It must be protected against upset by securing to pallets in cargo compartments with appropriate means of securement.
