Other items

Aerosols 

  • Non-radioactive medicinal or toiletry articles such as hairsprays, perfumes and medicines containing alcohol can be carried in hand and checked baggage.  The total quantity must not exceed 2kg or 2l, and the net quantity of each single item must not exceed 0.5kg or 0.5kg or 0.5l.

Hair curlers

  • Gas powered hair curlers/straighteners (one per person) providing the safety cover is fitted at all times - checked in or cabin baggage. They must not be used onboard the aircraft at any time. Separate refills are not permitted.

Christmas crackers

Christmas crackers may be carried in small quantities in either checked or hand baggage, subject to being in the original unopened manufacturer’s packaging and made by a reputable company. No handmade crackers are acceptable.  Max: 12 crackers per passenger.

Television

  • Televisions must be suitably packed and are always carried in the hold and at the owner’s risk
  • A limited release tag will be attached to indicate bmi will accept no responsibility for any damage
  • Fragile stickers will also be attached, and the item treated with all due care

Dead game birds/dead fish

Dead game birds and dead fish if for personal consumption and in small quantities can be carried in cabin baggage - they should be vacuum shrink wrapped and carried within the passenger's cabin baggage.

Larger quantities may be carried as hold baggage provided the birds/fish are sealed, do not give off unpleasant odours and do not represent any health hazard to the aircraft or its passengers.

There are no recognised containers for their carriage and bmi check-in staff will use their discretion.

Please note, animals presented for carriage which do not fall into this category should be referred to the Cargo department or bmi dangerous goods manager for approval to travel, as there are restrictions in place which may prohibit carriage.

Cigarette lighters

One small packet of safety matches or a cigarette lighter that does not contain unabsorbed liquid fuel, other than liquefied gas, may be carried about your person. Strike anywhere matches are forbidden on all air transport.

Human remains

Human remains may only be accepted for travel as airfreight.  Enquires regarding carriage should be directed to our Cargo Department.

Ashes may be carried as checked or cabin baggage, providing security are satisfied with the contents of the container.

Samples and collections

Samples and collections may be accepted as registered baggage but bmi will not be liable for the transportation unless they are covered by insurance. 

On international flights, customs regulations prohibit the import or export of merchandise in passenger's baggage.  All merchandise must be shipped as airfreight and the appropriate charges raised.

Commercial travellers’ exceptions

Commercial travellers are permitted to carry samples in their baggage provided:

  • Special customs clearance is given at the airport of departure
  • They present themselves and their baggage at least 30 minutes prior to the normal check–in time
  • If they arrive after this 30 minutes deadline, the baggage may be forwarded on a subsequent flight, incurring freight charges

Powered wheelchairs

A wheelchair with a non-spillable battery (dry cell) can be accepted in the hold provided:

  • The battery is disconnected and securely attached to the wheelchair in an upright position
  • The terminals are insulated to prevent short circuit (e.g enclosed within a battery container)

Note: Wheelchair/mobility aids with gel type batteries do not require the battery to be disconnected provided the battery terminal is insulated to prevent accidental short circuit.

A wheelchair with a spillable battery (wet cell) can be accepted in the hold provided:

  • The wheelchair can be handled, stowed and secured in an upright position
  • The battery is disconnected and/or securely attached to the wheelchair
  • The terminals are insulated to prevent short circuit.

If the battery is removed then the wheelchair or mobility aid may be carried without restriction provided that:

  • The removed battery is carried in strong ridged packaging
  • The packaging is be marked “Battery wet with wheelchair” or “Battery wet with mobility aid” and labelled with the “Corrosive” and “Package Orientation” labels
  • The container is leak proof and impervious to battery fluid
