baggage advice

Due to airport security restrictions currently in place in the UK, only ONE piece of hand baggage will be permitted when departing from or transferring through the UK. Regulations about the carriage of liquid also apply.

Our baggage allowance policy for passengers travelling to the UK follow the same guidelines for conisistency.

When flying with bmi you are permitted one piece of hand baggage, which should adere to the current security regulations, plus a free checked baggage allowance.

On services from Riyadh and Jeddah, up to 10 litres of holy water in a single container (shrink wrapped and secure) is permitted as hold baggage to the UK in addition to normal allowance.  The holy water container cannot be carried as hand baggage.

Important baggage information:

maximum weight

All passengers travelling to and from the UK are not permitted to check in any bag that weighs in excess of 32kg (70lbs). 

The maximum weight limit of 32kg for any individual piece of baggage does not relate to your overall entitlement but is a safety measure to reduce injuries to baggage handling staff.  Any item over 32kg should be referred to bmi cargo.

From 3 July 2006 in line with the Department of Transport IATA guidelines, and the implementation of these guidelines at BAA airports, hand baggage must have a maximum length of 56cm (22in), width of 45cm (18in) and depth of 25cm (10in).  These dimensions include wheels, handles, side pockets, etc.  If the hand baggage exceeds the IATA standard size, passengers will be asked to return to check-in and check the bag into the hold.

items banned from hand luggage

Please advise passengers that for safety reasons, the following items are not permitted in the passenger’s cabin luggage. All of the following items must be carried in your checked baggage:

  • Toy or replica guns
  • Pointed or bladed articles capable of causing injury, including but not limited to knives with blades of any length, razorblades, darts, scissors, knitting needles, corkscrews
  • Any blunt instrument capable of causing injury, including but not limited to baseball/cricket bats, golf clubs, billiard/snooker and pool cues.

Do not place any of the following items in checked baggage, they must be with the passenger onboard the aircraft:

  • Tickets, passports or other travel documents/identification papers
  • Fragile articles (including bottles containing liquid)
  • Jewellery, precious metals and other valuables, money, credit cards, cheques, negotiable papers, important documents, cameras, camcorders, car key, house keys etc.
  • Medicines.

Liability is not accepted for the loss, delayed delivery of, or damage to any of the above items packed in checked in baggage.

Medicines and toiletries in limited quantities such as hairsprays, perfumes, colognes and medicines containing alcohol, may be carried.

These are carried providing the net quantity of each single article does not exceed 0.5kg 0r 0.5L. The total quantity per person must not exceed 2kg or 2L.

items not permitted on aircraft

For safety reasons, the following items are not permitted in the passenger’s baggage:

  • Compressed gases – flammable, non-flammable and poisonous, e.g. butane, oxygen, liquid nitrogen, aqualung cylinders
  • Corrosives – such as acids, alkalis, apparatus containing mercury, wet cell batteries
  • Explosives – munitions, fireworks, flares – such as hand guns, pistolcaps and ammunition
  • Flammable liquids and solids – such as lighter fuel, ‘strike anywhere’ matches, paints, thinners, firelights
  • Radioactive materials
  • Briefcases and attaché cases with installed alarm devices
  • Oxidising materials such as bleaching powder and peroxides
  • Poisons and infectious substances such as insecticides weed killers and live viruses
  • Magnetised materials
  • Offensive or irritating materials.

Other dangerous articles may be carried as air cargo provided that they are packed in accordance with the Dangerous Goods Act. Please check with our travel trade line if you have additional questions and or queries.
