passport requirements

aircraft tail

A passport is not required for travel between Great Britain and Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. However, passengers travelling with bmi (including unaccompanied children) are required to bring either a passport or some form of acceptable photographic identification when travelling between the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Passengers under the age of 16 who are travelling with an adult do not need photographic identification to travel to/from the Republic of Ireland but it is advisable that they have some form of identification eg (birth certificate, bus pass, student ID)

travelling with children

All children must have their own, individual passport for travel abroad. This applies to all children from new-born babies until the age of 15.

Once children turn 16, they are eligible for the standard 10-year passport.

You can find more information on the UK passport service website

passport requirement for the USA

Under the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP) UK citizens need a machine readable passport to enter the USA. Anyone from a VWP-eligible country whose passport is not machine readable will have to buy a U.S. non-immigrant visa prior to arrival in the U.S.

This also applies to infants and children. Children, who until now had been officially added to their parent's passport, are also required to have a readable passport issued in their own name, or have a US visa issued to them fixed into the passport in which their name appears.
