Travel documents

It is important that your customers ensure they have the correct travel documents for their journey. Please advise them to check that their passport is up to date and that they have obtained any necessary visas in advance of travel.

Passports are required for all international flights and should be valid for at least the period of intended stay, however, some countries require passports to remain valid for longer periods, up to six months, the details of which should be checked with the embassy or consulate of the visiting country.

See The Foreign and Commonwealth Office for further advice on entry requirements.

EU*, EEA (EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and Swiss nationals are permitted to enter any EU/EEA member state on production of a valid national passport or national identity card in accordance with the Schengen Agreement**

A passport is not required for travel between Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands.

It should be noted that immigration controls are enforced in the Republic of Ireland for customers who are not British or Irish citizens, who are required to carry a valid travel document when arriving from Great Britain. However, British or Irish citizens travelling with bmi (including unaccompanied children) are required to bring either a passport or some form of acceptable photographic identification when travelling between the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Acceptable forms of photographic ID

Please see below what we accept as forms of photographic ID.

British or Irish customers under the age of 16 who are travelling with an adult on the same booking do not need photographic identification to travel to/from the Republic of Ireland but it is advisable that they have some form of identification for example a birth certificate, bus pass or student ID.

Acceptable forms of photographic ID include:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid photographic driver's licence
  • Valid photographic EU/EEA or Swiss national identity card
  • Valid armed forces identity card
  • Valid police warrant card/badge
  • Valid airport employees security identity pass
  • Valid business photographic ID (Dublin only)

If you are making an e-ticket booking for a client or your client is making a booking for someone other than themselves, the traveller will need to present either the form of payment or an acceptable form of photographic ID at the Check-in Desk.
