Passengers can travel with their dog, cat or ferret on UK domestic flights and international services departing from the UK*. To arrange this facility please contact the Travel Trade Helpline on + 44 (0) 870 606 1000.

*excludes 'tiny' fares.

Pets must be carried in an IATA approved pet carrier. The carrier must be:

  • A good size
  • Allow the animal room to stand naturally and turn around
  • Made of fibreglass, metal, rigid plastic or wood (No cage types are accepted).
  • A water bowl must also be provided.

Please note that Embraer aircraft cannot carry pets onboard. Other aircraft limit the number of animals carried so all requests are subject to space availability. bmi reservations can only book one animal per flight unless the animals are related or cohabiting and are then allowed to travel together.

The Pet Travel Scheme allows cats and dogs to enter the UK without the need for quarantine. To qualify for this scheme, pets must be micro-chipped and have all the paperwork required by the UK government.

Livestock such as cats and dogs may be carried as accompanied baggage within the UK, but may only be carried on bmi international services outbound from the UK. Animals cannot under any circumstances be accepted in the following cases:

  • baggage on international flights travelling to the UK. animal can only be accepted for carriage into the UK as cargo.
  • on international flights travelling to the UK - this includes animals in transit into the UK from overseas.
  • as accompanied baggage on any bmi charter flight

In the above cases, the animals can travel as cargo, and the passenger must be referred to bmi's Cargo department for further information.

Pets travel as cargo, and are be booked through the appointed handling agent at the appropriate airport.

Arrangements must be made as early as possible, preferably before the passenger leaves the UK. The agent will also advise where and when the pet should be handed over for the return flight.

Pets will not be accepted at passenger check-in.

pet charges

  • UK domestic flights - £40.00 per sector
  • International flights (outbound from the UK only) calculated at check-in
  • Carriage is charged at 1.4% of the full economy or business one-way fare and is subject to weight of animal and carrier
  • International flights (inbound to the UK) - Price is quoted by the appointed cargo agent (see list above).

limitations and regulations

  • On flights of up to 1.5 hours - maximum weight of animal, excluding carrying case, is 100kg
  • On flights of between 1.5 hours and 3 hours, the maximum weight of animal, excluding carrying case, is 75kg.

Assistance dogs can be transported in the cabin on domestic flights and international flights that depart from the UK.

bmi is can carry assistance dogs in the cabin into London Heathrow from: Alicante, Amsterdam, Brussels, Hanover, Naples, Nice, Palma, Paris and Venice, as part of the Pet Travel Scheme.
