respiratory conditions

Please see below for information on a variety respiratory conditions. Please ask your passenger the following questions to ascess if they require medical clearance to travel or not. 

asthma

Mild stable asthma is common and should pose few problems.

Uncontrolled asthma requires medical clearance.

A nebuliser may be used on the aircraft provided that it is battery operated.  (Mains power is not available)

questions:

Have you had to go to hospital with asthma in the last 3 months?

Yes – medical clearance required

No – proceed to next question

Is your asthma stable at the moment?

No – medical clearance required

Yes – proceed to next question

Have you needed a nebuliser in the last month?

Yes – medical clearance required

No- proceed to next question

Have you ever needed oxygen?

Yes – medical clearance required

No- proceed to next question

Stress that the passenger must pack their medication in their hand luggage at all times!

bronchitis and emphysema

Proceed exactly the same as for heart failure.


pneumothorax (collapsed Lung)

A passenger who has had a recent pneumothorax must not be accepted without medical clearance. Proceed to medical clearance.

cystic fibrosis

question: 

Does the passenger require oxygen on the ground?

Yes – medical clearance required

No – certificate of fitness to fly and oxygen required

oxygen

When a passenger requires oxygen on board the aircraft the following procedures are to be followed:

request

  • why is the oxygen required
  • is it required constantly or intermittently
  • at what rate of oxygen do they require – how many litres per minute?
  • have they flown before when they have used Oxygen
  • will they be accompanied

acceptance

  • 48 hours notice is required
  • aviation medical advice must be sought before accepting the booking
  • the customer must be accompanied by someone capable of administering the Oxygen (unless they are used to self administering)
  • contact will be made with cabin safety to order the Oxygen and advise the cabin crew

The following information will be relayed …

  • the name of the customer and the escort
  • why the customer needs Oxygen
  • the requirement of Oxygen – constant or intermittent
  • the flight number, date and destination
  • confirmation that Aviation medical clearance has been granted

charge

The charge of £100 is made per sector travelled. (Note: this charge does not currently apply to bmi regional flights)

bmi charter flights make a charge of GBP 200 and any request need to be made with the charter department pn 0870 240 7040 

The charge must be made and in order for us to account for it. The following remark will be made in the booking – GBP 100 to Code 0490/695/024

Note - passengers cannot take their own oxygen onboard an aircraft.
