recent surgery
A Certificate of Fitness to Fly is required for all passengers who have had surgery up to six weeks before the flight.
Surgery to limbs or to the skin surface does not present any problems.
A passenger who has had recent major body cavity surgery may encounter problems as trapped gas expands at altitude.
The general guidelines for flying after surgery are:
- Major abdominal surgery - wait three weeks
- Thoractic surgery - wait three weeks
- Neurosurgery - wait three weeks
- Appendectomy - wait 10 days
- Laparoscopy - wait 10 days
Passengers who have had an ear or sinus operation up to six weeks prior to a flight, require medical clearance.
