medical clearance

The Medical Clearance system helps to identify passengers whose medical condition could put them at risk while flying, cause offence to other passengers or increase the risk of an unplanned diversion.

In general, most infirm passengers can fly safely.  Below are the basic guidelines covering the few conditions which increase the risk of an unplanned and expensive diversion.

If you remain in any doubt after reading, ask for Medical Clearance, form available here.

how to get Medical Clearance

The passenger gives you their name, telephone number and a brief description of their medical problem. You ring this information through to bmi and our doctor will decide the appropriate action.

Certificate of Fitness to Fly

A Certificate of fitness to fly is a simple statement from the Passenger’s GP to the effect that they are fit to fly. Ask the passenger to contact his own GP who will provide this Certificate for a small fee.

MEDIF system

A MEDIF (Medical Information Form) is a standard form completed for the sick or disabled passenger so bmi has the necessary information to carry them safely.  It includes the agreement that bmi may seek information from other doctors responsible for the passenger’s care. It can be interlined to minimise administrative difficulties for passengers.

MEDIF’s produced by other airlines are accepted by bmi after assessment.

All MEDIF’s should be faxed to bmi for assessment.
