Guide to interline e-ticketing

What is interline electronic ticketing?

An e-ticket is a virtual, paperless ticket for general use. They are stored in a database rather than printed and distributed to a customer in a paper format.
Interline e-ticket enables a passenger to use e-ticket on an interline journey where more than one carrier is involved in the itinerary.

e.g Glasgow – London Heathrow – Vancouver where the first sector of the journey is operated by bmi and the second is operated by Air Canada

Computer messaging is used to send the information between the other carriers in the itinerary.

What are the benefits of interline e-ticket for the customer?

  • easier handling of itinerary changes and last minute travel decisions
  • more effective use of Internet capabilities
  • no more ‘lost paper tickets’
  • all a passenger needs is an itinerary receipt and the mandatory ticket notices

and to the airline agent?…….

  • complete itinerary viewable to call centre agent and airport agent in the ticket image
  • greater flexibility in servicing the Star Alliance customer
  • more accurate information in servicing the passenger

and to the airline?………..

  • reduced ticketing costs
  • reduced fraud, stolen & lost tickets
  • electronic processing means timely revenue recognition over paper
  • increased efficiency in revenue accounting
