pets travelling into the UK on an international service
Pets arriving in the UK on an international service will be subject to UK quarantine laws unless they have been prepared in accordance with the rules of the Pet Travel Scheme.
The Pet Travel Scheme
The pet travel scheme was launched by the UK government in February 2000 to allow domestic cats and dogs to enter the UK without the need to undergo quarantine. As part of the scheme pets must travel into the UK on an approved route with an approved transport company. You will also have to ensure that your pet has been micro-chipped and has all the necessary paperwork required by the government under the rules of the scheme. Your pet must travel as cargo and be delivered to the cargo warehouse at the airport of departure. Pets will not be accepted at passenger check-in. bmi has appointed agents at the airports where it operates the pet travel scheme, and the booking for the pet must be made through these agents. Arrangements should be made as early as possible, preferably before leaving the UK (if applicable). The agent will advise you where and when your pet should be handed over for the return flight. Below is a list of the routes that have been approved for bmi to operate the pet travel scheme:
Amsterdam to London Heathrow
Brussels to London Heathrow
Hannover to London Heathrow
Palma to London Heathrow
Chicago to Manchester
(Onward bookings can be made to other UK/Ireland destinations, for all pets arriving at London Heathrow)
