Where to stay

Stay at the De Doelen Hotel, located on the Grote Markt. With friendly staff and a choice of 4 cafes it's an excellent base for a relaxing break. If you're visiting on business then the Mercure Groningen Martiniplaza is a smart choice. The professional staff are efficient and helpful, and the clean, spacious rooms are a welcome retreat after a busy day.

What to see and do

For shopping and nightlife, head for the Grote Markt area. The Vismarkt, the Peperstraat and the Poelestraat are packed with merrymakers, with Thursday and Saturday the most popular party nights; some bars stay open until 7am. Groningen's city centre is mainly pedestrianised and, framed by the soothing canals, it's a picturesque and pretty town to stroll around.

Climb up the Martini Tower, one of the main tourist attractions in Groningen. Named after Saint Martinus and part of the Martini Church, it's the highest tower in the city and offers great views.

There are lots of nice little cafes and restaurants, serving simple snacks to full a la carte menus. Try PUUR! for delicious healthy and organic food at reasonable prices. Choose from sandwiches, salads, fresh fruit juices, smoothies, coffee and pastries. For something a little more special, reserve a table at 't Feith huis, close to the Martini Tower and the Grote Markt. The quality of the local produce is evident and if you don't fancy a huge dinner then it's also open for breakfast.

Voted as one of the  best city centre of the Netherlands, Groningen is well worth a visit. Book now with bmi and you'll soon see what you've been missing.
