From the airport

You'll fly into Freetown (Lungi) International Airport. Transport from the airport to Freetown requires some planning but you have a few options: a short helicopter ride will take you to the Aberdeen area, costing around £50. The safest and most reliable option is to arrange transfers with your hotel on booking. There is a ferry but it's a long, demanding journey that's often crowded and can take up to 8 hours.

The place to stay

Stay at the well-priced and comfortable Family Kingdom Resort. Safe and well-located for business travellers, the free wireless internet and nicely landscaped grounds are an escape from the daily bustle; the air conditioning a welcome relief after a busy day. Florence Guesthouse is a surprisingly good find if you're on a budget. Located on Lakka Beach, you'll get a clean, air-conditioned room with a great choice of food. There are some wonderful seafood restaurants nearby, try Franco's for delicious Carpaccio.

An African experience

To see how the African people lived in the past, pay a visit to Hill Station and admire the colonial houses on stilts. Many of them are dilapidated now but it's a fascinating look at the architecture of yesteryear. From Hill Station, take a leisurely walk along the route of the old railway line via Congo Cross to the centre of Freetown.

Spend the day at the beautiful Lumley Beach. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the gorgeous white, sandy beach is perfect for a spot of sunbathing. Have a round of golf at the Freetown Golf Club and make sure you buy some fresh peanuts from the local sellers. Freetown restaurateurs are the lucky recipients of some excellent quality seafood so do make sure you indulge in the finest.

Have a cold Star beer and enjoy the atmosphere at the famous Paddy's bar, located on the road into Aberdeen. Of historical significance, Paddy's was the only place to be consistently open during the World War II.

The new Sierra Leone

Peaceful since 2002, Sierra Leone has endured a difficult civil war and is currently undergoing a period of major reconstruction. The people of Sierra Leone are friendly and helpful, making Freetown an interesting discovery. Book now and enjoy the cultured city vibe or the idyllic white sandy beaches; whatever you choose, in Freetown you'll experience Africa at its very best.
