Most flights to Frankfurt carry earnest business people but there is a fun-loving side to this city that is well worth experiencing. The Römerberg is the historical centre of the city, birthplace of Goethe and home to Charlemagne, and nearby are treasure-filled art galleries and museums to rival Berlin’s collections. The Zeil rivals Fifth Avenue for the quality of its shopping while the Apfelwein district has all the traditional German gear you could want. Frankfurt’s nightlife is excellent too, with one of the continent’s best jazz bars - the esteemed Jazzkeller - and enough cutting-edge dance clubs to rival the capital.
Don’t get too ensconced though: just beyond the jagged skyline of Frankfurt’s futuristic buildings is the magnificent Rhine Valley, winding Main river and gorgeous scenery of the Romantic Road.

Accommodation tends to be in large hotels rather than smaller guesthouse or B&Bs.
