Iris recognition immigration system
An Iris Recognition Immigration System has been introduced at Heathrow terminal 1.
The system is an accurate and secure way to clear passport/immigration queues more quickly when entering the UK. The iris pattern in each person's eye (the coloured part of the eye) is unique which makes it possible for a person to be identified simply by looking into a special camera.
Registration posts are set up just after security at T1 international enabling quick, once only registration when leaving the UK. This process should take 5-10 minutes per passenger and is available from 0630 - 1830. Registration involves a UK immigration officer assessing your application to confirm you qualify for the scheme which is open to all passengers with either UK or EU valid passports and foreign nationals who travel to the UK frequently. Once suitability is confirmed, you will have a photograph taken of your iris pattern.
This iris pattern, photograph and personal data (name, date of birth, gender and nationality) will be securely stored on the UK immigration service system.
Upon arrival into the UK, you will see the iris immigration channel and go to an automated barrier. Once inside the barrier you will look into the iris camera and your iris pattern will be photographed. A registered passenger can then cross an IRIS barrier in about 20 seconds.
There is no need to remove glasses or contact lenses. Once recognised as being enrolled in the system the barrier will automatically open, allowing you to enter the UK. The iris barriers will be open in line with the airport operation and thus in line with all bmi flights.
IRIS is also in operation at the following United Kingdom airports:
- Heathrow terminals 1 to 5
- Manchester terminals 1 and 2
- Birmingham terminal 1
- Gatwick North and South terminals
