Travelling with a buggy - a quick guide
On the majority of our services, we offer a drop off and pick up service at the side of the aircraft for buggies up to 5kg in weight, so that parents can use their buggy right up until they board and as soon as they leave the aircraft.
For buggies over 5kg, these can be checked in for free along with your hold baggage and collected at the baggage carousel along with your checked-in baggage.
Fares and booking for infants
Infants under the age of 2 years are charged at 10% of the adult fare and do not occupy a seat. Infants must sit on an adult's lap.
Infants are charged insurance and security charges, unless travel originates in Spain when passenger service charge is also applicable.
An infant must be under 2 years of age at the date of outbound travel in order to be eligible for the discount.
If you are travelling with an infant who is two during your journey, they must by law, occupy a seat on any return flight on or after their birthday. On bmi operated flights, the infant's ticket and fare remain the same, however, a seat must be reserved for the return journey. This rule may differ when travelling on a partner operated flight. Please contact the operating carrier for more details.
Please call reservations on 0844 8484 888 to reserve your child's seat.
Booking for children
Children under 12 years must be accompanied by an adult 16 years or over. Visit unaccompanied children for further information about making a booking if your child needs to travel unaccompanied. Unaccompanied children booked online will be refused boarding.
The following child fares apply:
Accompanied child 2-11
- 75% of the full adult fare (may vary depending on route)
Unaccompanied child 5-11
Please note if the journey includes a sector not operated by bmi, then different conditions may apply.
UK Domestic flights
- No discount (except infant without seat)
Children travelling in selected classes on codeshare routes are charged at a discount of the adult fare, however there may be exceptions. Please check individual fare rules during the booking process.
If you require any further information on the fare rules above please call the bmi contact centre on 0844 8484 888 (UK only) or +44 1332 854854 (international).
Babies
Babies must not travel for the first seven days after birth. Premature babies and babies under medical supervision may only travel after medical clearance and must be accompanied by an approved medical escort.
Infants in child car seats
Child car seats can be used for infants between the ages of six months and three years.
Infants using a car seat must pay the appropriate children's fare. Bookings for infants in car seats cannot currently be booked online and must be made via the bmi contact centre.
The car seat must:
- Be forward facing
- Have a well-defined shell and where there is an under structure this must be securely attached
- Not show any signs of damage
- Not exceed the dimensions of the aircraft seat
- Have a single release harness which secures the child's lap, torso, and shoulders
Rear facing car seats will not be accepted.
Our top tips when travelling with young children
- If you have infants, try to change nappies just before boarding the aircraft and work feeding times around the take off and landing
- Avoid eating and drinking hot items whilst holding young children - this will help avoid accidents during turbulence
- Ask a member of staff if you can eat your meal after you have fed your child
- Remember to bring baby changing supplies although we do carry emergency quantities
- On arrival, try to stay onboard until last so a member of staff can bring your buggy (of under 5kg) to the aircraft door and help you disembark.
