Check-in information

We have a variety of Check-in options. Check-in times vary depending on the airport. Please confirm your latest Check-in time by viewing airport information.

Online Check-in

Online Check-in is available from 24 hours up to 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time, except for Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, where it closes one hour before departure.

Mobile Check-in

Mobile Check-in allows you to complete the entire Check-in process from your mobile phone.

Self Check-in

Self Check-in Machines are available at most UK airports and can be used on selected routes. All customers travelling Economy on shorthaul routes are required to use Online Check-in or Self Check-in where available.

Check-in Desks

Desks open at least two hours prior to departure. Please check airport information for more information about your departure airport.

  • For domestic and shorthaul flights, Check-in will close 30 minutes prior to departure.
  • For all other flights from the UK, Check-in will close 30 minutes for business class customers and between 45 and 60 minutes for economy customers prior to departure, depending on the airport.

Our Premium Check-in Area is available for Diamond Club Silver and Gold card members and customers travelling in Business from London Heathrow. Sit down and relax as our staff take your luggage and travel documents and complete Check-in for you.

Boarding

You must be at your gate area at least 30 minutes prior to departure. Please be aware that gate changes may happen at short notice

We will board your flight by seat row number. If you're travelling with young children or have reduced mobility you will be given priority boarding.

The boarding gate doors close up to 20 minutes prior to departure. If you arrive after this time you may not be accepted for the flight. Please allow sufficient time to check in and go through security.

Connecting customers

If you're connecting via London Heathrow with baggage, you must check in at least 60 minutes prior to departure or at the stated Check-in time, whichever is earlier

Our Online Check-in is designed to make your journey easier. The simple and convenient process allows you to choose your seat and eliminate the need to queue. Online Check-in is available from 24 hours up to 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time, except for Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Tehran where it closes one hour before departure.

Paperless Boarding

One of the great benefits of Online Check-in is Paperless Boarding. For the ultimate in speed and convenience simply select Paperless Boarding when checking in to have your boarding pass sent to your mobile phone. Checking in couldn't be simpler. 

Using Online Check-in

Once you have checked in online, simply follow the steps below:

  • Print your boarding pass before you leave for the airport or select Paperless Boarding to have your boarding pass sent to your mobile phone (where the option is available)
  • Drop off your bags at the bmi Fast Bag Drop (available at Aberdeen, Belfast City, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, London Heathrow and Manchester)
  • Go straight to departures.

If you are having difficulty printing your boarding pass you can:

  • Email your boarding pass to your email address and print it once you have access to a printer
  • Collect your boarding pass from the bmi Check-in Desk at the airport.

Online Check-in restrictions

You can't use Online Check-in if:

  • You have requested special medical arrangements
  • You hold a paper ticket
  • You are travelling from one of the locations listed below.

The following are bmi operated routes where Online Check-in is NOT currently available

Departures from

Agadir, Copenhagen, Esbjerg, Freetown, Groningen

Please note that although departures from Addis Ababa, Almaty, Amman, Baku, Beirut, Bishkek, Cairo, Damascus, Dammam, Jeddah, Moscow, Riyadh, Tbilisi and Tehran have the option of Online Check-in, no boarding pass will be available for printing, and you will need to go to the Check-in Desk at the airport to complete the check-in process.

Republic of Ireland

All passengers printing their boarding cards at home and flying between the UK and the Republic of Ireland must present an acceptable form of photographic ID at security. 

When departing from Dublin, your printed boarding pass will be exchanged for a boarding card which will enable you to proceed through security.

Mobile Check-in is ideal for busy people on the move. You can check in for your flight, confirm flight details and choose your seat all from your mobile phone.

Making life easier

To use Mobile Check-in, just follow the simple steps below: 

  • Check in online via your mobile phone at www.flybmi.com/mobile
  • Select Paperless Boarding and have your boarding pass sent to your mobile phone or choose to collect it from the airport
  • Enter your mobile number.

Paperless boarding is not available on all of our routes. For routes where paperless boarding is available, take a look below. We are continuously adding routes so check back in the future if your route is not currently listed.

Your boarding pass will be sent to your internet enabled phone via an SMS message. The message will contain a link to download your boarding pass.

Who can use Self Check-in?

Self Check-in Machines are available at most bmi airports within the UK and Ireland. They close 30 minutes prior to departure for UK Domestic and Western European shorthaul flights, and 45 minutes prior to departure for all other routes. 

Economy passengers travelling on a shorthaul route must use either a Self Check-in Machine, where available, or our Online Check-in service. 

Business or Flexible Economy passengers, and Gold or Silver Diamond Club members have the option of using either a Self Check-in Machine or the manned Check-in Desks.

How do I use Self Check-in?

Using our Self Check-in Machines is simple:

  • To identify your reservation, either use your booking reference, e-ticket number, credit card or frequent flyer card, or you may scan your passport
  • Please note, the receipt will only be printed if you request it, and the receipt has not previously been printed
  • Take your documents from the machine and proceed to departure gate or lounge
  • If you have bags to check in then proceed to a bmi Fast Bag Drop, where available, or a bmi Check-in Desk.
