You can take your dog or cat with you if you’re flying from the UK.*
You will need to notify our Reservations Team about your pet when you book your ticket. There is a charge for your pet and you'll be given details of this when you book.
Your pet must be carried in an IATA approved pet carrier, which must be big enough to:
- Allow your pet to turn about normally while standing
- Stand and sit in an upright position
- Lie in a natural position
* You will not be able to carry any pets on our Embraer aircraft, which operate on bmi routes.
If you want to bring your pet cat or dog back to the UK and avoid quarantine, then your pet must comply with the requirements of the UK Government’s Pet Travel Scheme. bmi is approved by the UK authorities to carry cats and dogs that comply with the Pet Travel Scheme on all it’s routes into London Heathrow; however, some routes may not be suitable for the carriage of pets due to the flight time and the aircraft type in use.
Your pet must travel as cargo in the hold of the aircraft when you return, regardless of whether or not you are travelling at the same time. Due to limits to the number of animals allowed on each flight, it is not always possible for pets to travel on the same flight as their owner.
Under the rules of the Pet Travel Scheme, if you want to arrange to bring your pet into the UK, you must make a booking with the appropriate cargo agent at the airport from which your pet will be flying.
It’s a good idea to book your pet in as early as possible, preferably at the same time you make your booking and before leaving the UK.
Your agent will also advise you where, and when, the pet should be handed over for the return flight. Pets will not be accepted at check-in.
The cost of bringing your pet back to the UK is usually more than the cost to take your pet out of the UK. This is because of the detailed procedures that have to be followed to comply with the Government rules of the scheme.
