Health and Safety

Healthcare in the USA is high quality but expensive making comprehensive travel and medical insurance cover essential.

New York has two international airports, JFK and Newark. From JFK, taxis take about 45 minutes to central Manhattan and charge a USD45 flat fare (plus tips and tolls). There are also airport buses and subway options. Newark is around the same distance, with typical USD40 taxi fare (plus tips and tolls). There is no subway, but bus services are available.

Statue of Liberty

Statue of Liberty If ever a national monument epitomised a city, it is Liberty Enlightening the World. Liberty and Ellis Islands can easily be reached by tourist ferry, though decent enough views can be had on the ferry service to Staten Island. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands 46m high, and is surrounded by museum exhibits telling the history and significance of the statue.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art Located on Museum Mile on the east side of Central Park, 'The Met' is the Big Daddy of New York museums. It houses some two million exhibits and is one of the world's largest art galleries. Forget seeing anything like all of it in one day, and choose the most interesting from the 19 cultural departments, from Ancient Egypt to American modern art.

Top of the Rock

Top of the Rock You'll spend most of your time in New York looking up – it is the National Park of Skyscrapers, after all. Take the chance to look down on the city from this sophisticated space 70 stories up in the Rockerfeller Plaza. The views from the observation deck are dazzling, and it's the city's only true 360-degree panorama from such a height.
