Health and Safety

Flights to Helsinki arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, situated 12 miles from the city centre. Buses reach the centre in 35 minutes: the Finnair shuttle (€5.90) runs to Elielinaukio while bus 61 (€3.8) links the airport and station. Taxis (€30) are readily available outside the arrivals hall, and journey time to the city centre is 25 minutes. For leisure visitors, the Helsinki Card (€33) offers free public transport and free museum access.

Senate Square

Senate Square: The symbolic centre of the city and home to summer concerts, this square is dominated by Helsinki Cathedral whose opulent façade fades away into an unadorned Lutheran interior. When you've admired the architecture, check out the neighbouring cafes, design stores and leafy boulevards.

Kiasma

Kiasma: This stunning museum of contemporary art is the city's hippest haunt and a showcase for art blockbusters from abroad. The innovative collection of post 1950s art is housed in a sinuous, Zen-like space designed by the American architect, Steven Holl.

Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress

Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress (Suomenlinna, a 15-minute ferry hop from Helsinki harbour): This 250-year old island citadel built by the Swedes is now a Unesco Heritage Site and Helsinki's most engaging attraction with the scenic walks, secret passageways, dry docks and coastal views. It is now lived in by 650 Finns and was recently declared the citizens' favourite spot.

Quick Lunch - Kellarkrouvi

Kellarkrouvi offers an array of Finnish and Scandinavian food in a warm, old-world inn with a cellar-bar and cosy meeting room.

Top Table - Walhalla

Walhalla is set on Suomenlinna island, and is a vaulted affair built into the fortress bastions. The brick-and-granite dining room and summer terrace showcase creative Finnish cuisine, with dishes based on salmon, lobster and crayfish.

Cheap Eat - Suomenlinnan Panimo

Suomenlinnan Panimo is a waterfront inn and brewery beside the main ferry stop on Suomenlinna. Tuck into the Finnish buffet washed down with Hopken Pils, the house brew.

Formal Presentation - Walhalla

Hilton Helsinki Vantaa (1 Lentajankuja, Vantaa, 00 358 973 220) doubles as a stylish airport hotel and a handy spot for steamy boardroom shenanigans - in the conference room or sauna.

Evening Drinks - Suomenlinnan Panimo

Ateljee Bar (Sokos Hotel Torni, 5 Kalevankatu, 00 358 943 36340) serves Karhu lager in an eyrie that is part gallery, part viewing platform.
