World / Asia / Kyrgyzstan

Sometimes fancifully referred to as ‘the Switzerland of Asia' because of its mountainous landscape, Kyrgyzstan is perhaps the most liberal of all the Central Asian republics. In Kyrgyzstan, tourism is largely of the outdoor adventure variety and those planning hiking or horse-riding holidays in Kyrgyzstan will find a great choice of facilities. The country is also keen to attract foreign investment for its mining and hydroelectric industries and, therefore, welcomes and caters very well for business visitors. The main business hub is the capital Bishkek, a likeable city with a good range of hotels, restaurants and nightclubs – important as entertaining is an essential part of doing business in Central Asia.

Leisure travellers are tempted by the snow-capped Kyrgyz Alatau mountains, clearly visible from the city centre. The Ala-Archa and Alamedin valleys close to the capital offer excellent hiking. Head east to Lake Issyk-Kul and you can also go trekking in the lush alpine valleys south of the town of Karakol. The possibilities for hiking are virtually limitless throughout the country – at least during the summer. Lake Song-Kol, a high-altitude lake in central Kyrgyzstan offers a glimpse of traditional nomadic culture, while the pristine, forested wilderness around the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve in the west is simply stunning. For those in search of more urban attractions, the southern city of Osh has a labyrinthine bazaar, a wealth of traditional Uzbek restaurants and plenty of historic sights to explore.
