Travel documents

It is important that you ensure that you have the correct travel document (identity document), and that it is valid before you commence your journey. In some circumstances it will be necessary to obtain a visa before departure. We also recommend that you leave sufficient time to check the entry requirements for your destination. The embassy or consulate of the country you are travelling to will be able to provide you with this information. As stated in our conditions of carriage, you are responsible for obtaining all required travel documents and visas and for complying with the laws, regulations and travel requirements of countries you intend to fly to, from and/or through.

When making a booking your name must match your name as it appears on your passport or travel document.  We cannot accept you for travel unless all your documents match.

Passports

Passports that are required for all International flights should normally be valid for at least your period of intended stay. Some countries require passports to remain valid for longer periods, up to six months, the details of which should be checked with the embassy or consulate of the country you are travelling to. In lieu of a passport EU*, EEA (EU + Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and Swiss nationals are permitted to enter any EU/EEA member state on production of a valid national passport or national identity card. From 30 March 08 the internal border controls between some EU Member States for air travel will be removed in accordance with the expansion of the Schengen Agreement**. The new EU accession States of Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia will then participate in the Schengen Agreement.

A passport is not required for travel between Great Britain, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. It should be noted that immigration controls are enforced in the Republic of Ireland for customers who are not British or Irish citizens, who are required to carry a valid travel document when arriving from Great Britain. However, British of Irish citizens travelling with bmi (including unaccompanied children) are required to bring either a passport or some form of acceptable photographic identification when travelling between the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Acceptable forms of photographic ID

Please see below what we accept as forms of photographic ID.

British or Irish customers under the age of 16 who are travelling with an adult on the same booking do not need photographic identification to travel to/from the Republic of Ireland but it is advisable that they have some form of identification for example a birth certificate, bus pass or student ID.

Acceptable forms of photographic ID include:

  • Valid passport
  • Valid photographic driver's licence
  • Valid photographic EU/EEA or Swiss national identity card
  • Valid armed forces identity card
  • Valid police warrant card/badge
  • Valid airport employees security identity pass
  • Valid business photographic ID (Dublin only)

If you are making an e-ticket booking for someone other than yourself, the traveller will need to present an acceptable form of photographic ID at the Check-in Desk.
