Flights to San Diego arrive at San Diego International Airport, which is conveniently located within the city. The 992 Metro Bus ($2.25) takes you to downtown San Diego in under 15 minutes and taxis ($10) are readily available outside the arrivals hall.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park: Situated near the city centre, Balboa is the USA's largest cultural park. Within its 1,200 acres are 15 museums, the Old Globe theatre, various formal and botanical gardens, and San Diego Zoo, which has a renowned breeding programme for endangered species including the giant panda.

USS Midway

Try your hand at flying jet fighter planes (in a simulator, obviously) at USS Midway at Navy Pier. The longest-serving US Navy aircraft carrier was decommissioned in 1992 and now houses a fascinating naval aviation museum. There are over 60 exhibits, including a display of 24 restored aircraft including an F-14 Tomcat, F-4 Phantom II and a T-2 Buckeye.

Old Town State Historic Park

Old Town State Historic Park is known as the Birthplace of California for a good reason – it's the site of the first permanent Spanish settlement in California back in 1769. Wander around the adobe brick buildings, which house a museum, reconstructed homes, a chapel, and some authentic Mexican restaurants. The Old Town Trolley tour stops at all three locations.
