Flights to Halifax arrive at Halifax Stanfield International Airport. Airporter runs a shuttle service from the arrivals terminal to most downtown hotels (CAD18). Taxis and private limousine services (CAD53) are available outside the arrivals hall. Journey time 45 minutes.

Citadel Hill

Citadel Hill: Overlooking the city, the citadel that now stands at this formerly strategic naval point is now a National Historic Site. It has been restored to its original state, and is brought alive through a living history programme which employs real soldiers and civilians to recreate the past. The cannon is fired daily at noon.

Pier 21

Also known as Canada's Immigration Museum, Pier 21 (1055 Marginal Rd, 001 902 423 4045), celebrates the stories of some of the 1.5 million immigrants who passed through the Pier between 1928 and 1971. Highlights include the World War II exhibits in Exhibition Hall.

Maritime Museum of the Atlantic.

Take a tour of Halifax's great maritime heritage at The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic (1675 Lower Water St, 001 902 424 7490). The MMA collection features surviving vessels and artifacts from the last 200 years, including the biggest collection of artifacts from the Titanic, as Halifax was the closest major port to where the great ship sank.
