Flights to Alicante arrive at El Altet Airport, situated 11 km (7 miles) southwest of the city.  The c-6 bus service leaves every 40 minutes for the city centre (€1.20), and takes 30-40 minutes. Taxis take 20-25 minutes and cost approximately €18. There is also a good urban bus network with a €1.10 flat fare.

Santa Barbara Castle

Santa Barbara Castle (Mount Benacantil) You can't miss the medieval castle which overlooks the city from the top of Mount Benacantil. Most of the structure dates from the 16th century, but it was built on the remains of an Iberian fort and there are Roman and Moorish vestiges too.  Take the lift up from Postiguet beach, stand on the ramparts and take in the fabulous views across the bay. Contemporary art exhibitions are held inside.

Considered to be one of the best museums in Europe, it provides an entertaining as well as an educational discovery of Alicante down the centuries.

Tabarca Island

Tabarca: Take the regular boat service from Alicante to the island of Tabarca, an hour's voyage away.  Less than 2 km long and 400 metres wide at its widest point, it served as a refuge for pirates from the north coast of Africa until a fortress was built in the 18th century. Its pretty harbour is flanked with fish restaurants, and the sea around the island is an underwater nature reserve of great interest to divers.
