World / Europe / Italy / Naples

In a gorgeous bay alongside Europe's biggest active volcano, Naples is the most chaotic, lively and Vespa-infested place in Italy. But amid the gesticulating drivers are historic palaces, churches and monuments, great shops and restaurants.

Flights to Naples land at Naples Capodichino, four miles north of the centre. Alibus shuttles run every 30 minutes, take about 20 minutes and cost just €3. Taxis are quicker but cost €25. Much of the centre is walkable but there's also a subway, quirky underground funicular system plus tram and bus networks. Ferries to the islands, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast leave from Porto Beverello in front of Castel Nuovo.

National Archaeological Museum

Naples has 36 museums and if you've only time for one it must be the National Archaeological Museum (Piazza Museo 19) one of Europe's best collections of ancient history. Anything portable from Pompeii's excavations was brought to this grand old palace. You'll wander through huge halls stuffed with stunning statues, jewels and even Roman erotica.

Pompeii

The World Heritage site of Pompeii is the other side of Vesuvius, a short bus or train ride away. You'll stroll paved streets and peep in houses, shops and public buildings of the Roman town preserved for 2000 years beneath volcanic ashes.

Capri Island

The sumptuous island of Capri is just 40 minutes by boat but its exotic mix of ancient history and jet-set glamour make it seem light years from Naples' hurly-burly. Star attractions include boats to the Blue Grotto cave, Emperor Tiberius's villa, plus posh shops, restaurants and gardens that cater to Capri's millionaire residents. Look out for celebrities too…

Quick Lunch - Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba

Grab a simple, quick and memorable lunch at Antica Pizzeria Port'Alba, the oldest pizzeria in town and, with an old wood-burning oven, still one of the best.

Top Table - La Bersagliera

Among the seafood restaurants next to Castel dell'Ovo, the bistro-like La Bersagliera, is best. Eat inside or out; specialities include swordfish, baby octopus and clam and mussel soup.

Cheap Eat - Café Intra Moenia

Beneath a creeper-covered façade Café Intra Moenia is a quiet literary café, bar and bookshop. Fill up on various omelettes or bruschetta.

On Business - Le Cheminée

Le Cheminée is a four-star business hotel in a 19th-century ceramics works near the airport. Unfussy suites have ADSL lines, plus five well-equipped meeting rooms for 15 to 250 people and a large exhibition hall.

Coffee And Chat - Caffe Gambrinus

Pastries and coffees come second to chat and people-watching amid the belle époque marble, mirrors and antiques of Caffe Gambrinus (Via Chiaia 1-2, 00 39 081 417 582).

Formal Presentation - Palazzo Alabardieri

With natural light, high-tech facilities and flexible sizes and shapes, business meeting rooms at Palazzo Alabardieri (Via Alabardieri 38, 00 39 081 415 278) are among Naples' best.

Evening Drinks - Bourbon Street

Bourbon Street (Via Bellini 52, Centro Storico, 00 39 334 381 8158) changes from smart cocktail bar to very cool jazz club once bands start playing.
