Flights to Munich arrive at Franz-Josef-Strauss Airport (00 49 89 975 00), situated 17 miles outside the city. From there, take either the S1 or S8 line on the Munich suburban railway to reach the centre of town. It costs about €8-€9 depending on how far you go. Taxis (€50) are readily available outside the arrivals hall.

Hofbräuhaus

The Hofbräuhaus: Probably the world's most famous beer hall, this Munich institution can accommodate up to 5,000 drinkers. It's been there since 1644, and is famous for its cheery hospitality. Don't sit at a table marked 'Stammtisch' as these are reserved for regular patrons.

Nymphenburg Palace
