Flights to Frankfurt arrive at the main airport Flughafen Frankfurt am Main, 12 miles south of the city. It is served by the modern S-Bahn S8/S9 train service which runs every 15 minutes into the city centre with a journey time of 12 minutes (€2) and taxis (€25). Car hire is available. Journey time by road 20 minutes.

Alte Opera

Alte Opera, Old Opera House. A must for enthusiasts of ballet, musical concerts or renaissance architecture. Built in 1880, the Alte Opera suffered in the last world war, earning the catchy nickname 'Germany's Most Beautiful Ruin'. Now rebuilt, it is the city's leading cultural venue.

Sachsenhausen embankment

Sachsenhausen embankment, fondly known as the city's 'museum mile'.  There are 16 museums, including the Stadel Art Instituteone of the most famous museums in Germany and home to a seriously impressive collection of old masters dating back 700 years. Including works by Monet and Van Gogh. Other museums along the mile include the Senckenberg Museum of natural history, the Dialogue Museum where exhibits cannot be seen, only felt, heard, smelt or tasted, and the German Film Museum (Schaumainkai 41) plus there's bar after bar serving chilled apfelwein, the local cider brew.

Geothe Haus

Geothe Haus. Fans of romantic writer Johann Wolfgang von Geothe will be fascinated by this large mansion over five floors. It was here Geothe lived and penned his classics, including the drama Faust. A visit gives a good insight into how the middle classes lived in 18th century Frankfurt.

Head for the Main Tower Restaurant for a great lunch – the gourmet food is as memorable as the view from this 53rd floor eaterie.

Top Table - Tigerpalast Restaurant and Bistrot

A Michelin star venue, the Tigerpalast Restaurant and Bistrot offers artfully presented gourmet dishes in surroundings that are pure theatre. There's music hall style entertainment too.

Cheap Eat - Zur Schonen Mullerin

Cheap doesn't mean lack of taste at Zur Schonen Mullerin, especially if you like apples. It serves dishes such as schnitzel with apple, followed by cider (apfelwein) from its own presses, a tradition that started in the 1800s.
