Flights to Manchester touch down at Manchester Airport, situated ten miles south of the city. The airport is served by regular train services to and from Piccadilly train station (£2.65 one-way), and the journey time is 20 minutes. Taxis (£20) are available outside the arrivals hall, and journey time to Manchester city centre is 20-30 minutes. Manchester also has an extensive bus and Metrolink tram network that covers the city. The town centre and most tourist attractions are accessible on foot.

Urbis

Urbis: This modernist, all-glass structure is a landmark development for the phoenix-like Manchester, and explores contemporary, urban culture via a busy programme of exhibitions, events and screenings. It appeals to the art-school crowd but also caters for family and community events, looking at the influence of Manchester as a city of industry and culture throughout history.

The Imperial War Museum North

The Imperial War Museum North : Hop on the Metrolink to The Quays, in the suburb of Salford, to catch the permanent collection, or the latest compelling exhibition to examine the theme of the human cost of war. The museum is the sister property to London's Imperial War Museum and the building's famously angular design is the legacy of the award-winning architect Daniel Libeskind.

Walking Tours

Walking tours: Strolling around Manchester city centre is the best way to uncover the stories behind the Victorian facades and industrial landmarks. Choose from numerous themed walking tours led by Blue Badge guides, from industrial heritage trails to literary connections via landmarks of the city's music scene. Most two-hour walking tours depart from the Manchester Visitor Information Centre by the Town Hall.

With up-and-coming artwork on a range of themes, including ‘iPhone and the Derive’ and ‘The City Experiment’, this year it’s about big art in the big city. Set in venues across Manchester and by no means confined to galleries, museums or pavilions - this is a festival with a view to embrace the forward-looking - with music, film, installation and performance all playing requisite roles.
