Flights to London's Heathrow airport offer the widest choice of onward connections and getting from Heathrow to the centre of the British capital is also a straight-forward affair. Heathrow Express trains leave every 15 minutes and take 15 minutes to London Paddington. Cheaper  Heathrow Connect  trains to Paddington leave half-hourly, make local stops and take 25.  London Underground's Piccadilly Line service takes  an hour between Heathrow and the West End. Taxis - London's iconic black cabs - are also widely available, but the journey at rush hour can take much longer than public transport.

Tate Modern

Tate Modern: The building stars almost as much as the artworks, as this former power station now dominates the Thames skyline on the south bank. Inside, the Tate Modern houses international modern art of every conceivable description – some more credible than others. The main Turbine Hall usually contains an impressive major work, specially commissioned for the space.

London Eye

London Eye: Seven years in the making and debuting in March 2000, this colossal wheel takes you up in a transparent pod to get the full panorama of the city. The London Eye turns at just 1km per hour, as you climb to 135 metres. At 800 people per revolution, it's advisable to book your flight.

Borough Market

Borough Market: Just outside the city near London Bridge, this artisan's market has become one of London's major foodie attractions. During the week, a limited number of stall holders bring their gourmet selections for sampling, but the true spirit of Borough Market can be found early at the weekends, when it's worth getting up to enjoy the free samples!

Quick Lunch - Coq d'Argent

Coq d'Argent. The hustle and bustle of the Square Mile is laid out before you at this roof garden French restaurant. Classic fish and meat dishes complement the impressive surroundings.

Coffee And Chat - The Bean

The Bean (126 Curtain Road, EC2, 00 44 207 739 7829). One of the less pretentious coffee shops just north of Liverpool Street, and frequently used for informal meetings, often by laptop-wielding media types. Relaxed and bright.

Formal Presentation - The Barbican

The Barbican (Silk Street, EC2, 00 44 207 638 4141). The cultural centre of east London boasts three cinema/presentation spaces, six meeting suites and a boardroom - perfect for a striking presentation venue.

Evening Drinks - Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (145 Fleet St, EC4, 00 44 207 353 6170). There's been a pub here since the 16th century. The stunning historic interior is worth the visit alone, and it's handy for the City.

Royal College of Art Summer Show

A gem in the crown of the post-graduate calendar, the RCA Summer Show is unmatched when it comes to talent uncovered each year. Featuring work from across the breadth of the Royal College departments, including fine art, design, architecture and fashion - this is the place to be if you’re out to spot the next big thing. Dates are changeable, and shows will be spread across the RCA’s new Battersea home and the usual Kensington location, so see the website for more detailed information nearer the time.

28 May 2010 - 10 Jun 2010
Royal College of Art, Kensington Gore, SW7 2EU

Contemporary Architecture

Likely to prove one of the most invigorating architectural exhibitions of the year, the V&A will this summer play host to a selection of commissioned works from a series of international architects. Briefed to design and build a structure around the concept of ‘retreat’, the resulting architectural works will be spread out across the museum. A move away from conventional modes of architectural exhibiting – and the tendency to focus on drawings and models – the show will instead expose visitors to the finished structures.

08 Jun 2010 - 20 Aug 2010
V&A South Kensington, Cromwell Road, SW7 2RL

The London Design Festival

A highlight in London’s creative calendar, the annual design festival will take over the city for one week this coming September - and following last year’s giant chess set from Jaime Hayon and Wallpaper’s very own chair arch - 2010’s outing holds even more in store. With 100% Design at Earl’s Court and a range of exhibitions and openings taking place throughout the week, there should be more than enough to keep even the most voracious of design appetites satisfied.

18 Sep 2010 - 26 Sep 2010

Pick Me Up: Contemporary Graphics Art Fair

Offering a unique opportunity to invest in some limited edition graphic art, illustration or design, Pick me Up – at London’s Somerset House – is the first fair of its kind in the UK. Featuring a whole host of exhibitions, events and interactive one-offs alongside the stalls - highlights will include an open studio from legendary paper artist Rob Ryan and a pop-up print workshop from Print Club London.
