The Citadel

The Citadel (Old City): Rising over the souks, this conical hill dominates the city. It was the site of a temple as long ago as the 10th century BC, though most of what survives on the summittop dates from the Crusades. Cross the broad moat on an arched bridge to approach the massive fortified gateway, behind which survives the Great Mosque and remains of an Islamic-era palace.

The Souks

The Souks (Old City): From the Bab Antakya (Antioch Gate), in the west of the Old City, Aleppo's souks coil through tangled lanes and alleyways lined with shops selling everything from jewellery and silks to rope, kitchenware, spices, shoes and meat, interspersed with courtyards, mosques and noble residences dating from the 17th or 18th centuries. Come here to lose yourself amidst the fluster of daily life, as all Aleppo's inhabitants comes here to shop, eat, drink, gossip, relax and pray.

Jdeida

Jdeida: Aleppo's most attractive quarter is a dense web of honeystone-flagged lanes, home to many of Aleppo's Christians. Visit churches belonging to the Greek Orthodox, Armenian, Maronite and other communities, eat at one of the many restaurants, or just stroll around and absorb the atmosphere.
